Client
Enviva is the world’s largest producer of wood pellets, a cleaner energy alternative to fossil fuels. To upgrade the access control system for all facilities, they brought in ASD® to handle the technology rollout.
Challenge
Enviva already had several locations for manufacturing, storage, and office space; they just wanted to upgrade their access control system. They began researching their different options and discovered OpenPath, which provides a cloud-based, mobile-friendly access control solution. ASD® is one of OpenPath’s preferred installers, so they put us in touch.
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS
- What extra safety precautions need to be taken?
- Will technicians be available to service all the facilities, considering their remote locations?
- Which access control solution will allow them to monitor and manage the system remotely?

Solution
Enviva’s business is dangerous, so safety and security are paramount. Choosing the right system was the first hurdle. OpenPath ultimately seemed like the best solution because the cloud-based platform allowed them to manage their locations remotely with a simple app.
The next hurdle was the physical installation of the technology. Because of how flammable wood pellets are, Enviva’s manufacturing plants can’t be within five miles of a metropolitan area, and most are in remote locations. This made finding a qualified technician tricky, but with the AASDI network, we could find the perfect fit for the job and select one technician to service all the facilities. Choosing a single technician helped expedite the installation process and ensured consistent deliverables, which was especially important considering that all the existing locations differed. One had a brick wall that the tech had to go through, and another had metal, so a fiberglass wall had to be built around the work area to contain the sparks.
Result
Now, Enviva has an updated and modern access control solution across all its locations, from its corporate office in Raleigh, NC, to its manufacturing plant in Cottondale, FL. Management and maintenance are now significantly easier. Users can be added or removed, doors can be monitored, and more, all with the touch of a button. ASD® was able to deploy the technology quickly to ensure minimal downtime.
